The Student Government Association is a group that serves a variety of organizations on campus. It is represented by student senators, each of whom were chosen to represent their peers in their respective clubs. The senators meet regularly to discuss policies and the distribution of funds to facilitate the various activities student groups engage in. The senators allow students to have their voices heard and make real change at High Point University.
The president of SGA this year is Alex Bush, a political science major, a student justice and a brother of the Beta Theta Pi fraternity. He is a senior from Aspen, Colorado, who loves to ski, backpack and do anything else in the great outdoors. He plans to attend law school in the years after graduation. Bush answered various questions about the SGA’s plans for the future.
What events are coming from the Student Government Association this semester?
“There are several events to look forward to this year and semester,” said Bush. “We have the ‘CANpaign’ food drive going on currently along with service events such as ‘Truck or Treat’ in Halloween, the ‘Stuff a Stocking’ event in December and an HPPD and HPFD thank-you event for Valentine’s Day scheduled. We also have many more events to work between the administration and the student body including the University Community Affairs Board on Nov. 14 and other more individual events ongoing and as needed.”
Are there any projects planned for HPU organizations to help the community?
“We will hold a ‘competition bowl’ of sorts for the clubs on campus to compete in events,” explained Bush. “The winning club will be able to donate to a charity of their choice.
Are there any new events for students to look forward to?
“We are working on some new events in addition to strengthening the existing ones,” said Bush. “These are mostly the service events and community events, but we are working closely with the class officers to hold more events open to students such as the Freshman Formal from last year. We are also working on a diversity food truck/movie week where we can explore food and movies from cultures across the globe.”
What events should students interested in volunteering or becoming more involved on campus anticipate?
“There are dozens of volunteer events each semester and emailing sgaservice@highpoint.edu is a great way to get involved. We are also creating committees such as a treasurer committee, security, IT department and more. If students are interested in these we would love for them to reach out. These allow us to make small focus groups to work with us, students and the administration to solve problems around our campus community.”
The Student Government Association is built to help students run their on-campus organizations, so newly formed groups should be sure to register for SGA. If students are interested in joining a committee for HPU, they can contact Alex Bush at abush@ highpoint.edu
