Travis Wright, a new Student Success Coach at High Point University, joined the team over the summer to assist students majoring in strategic communication, media production, entrepreneurship, pop culture, media production and game and interactive media design.
Wright received a bachelor’s degree in English Literature from Appalachian State University and a master’s degree in Higher Education from the University of North Carolina at Wilmington.
When he first visited HPU, he was quite impressed. “The campus is unbelievable, and the resources provided for students are remarkable,” Wright said. Being a success coach is Wright’s first professional job out of graduate school.
“My focus is to continue building relationships with students and navigating the nuances of what students face,” Wright said. “They have some of the same challenges that I had.”
Wright wants to get more involved with national organizations, perform a social media marginalization research study and receive his doctorate.
“I noticed that a lot of interactions with my team happen in the office, so I am excited to change things a little by meeting students where they are,” Wright said.
Wright learned a lot through past experiences that drive his passions and led him to where he is now.
“I was told I was not good enough for my first-choice school, so I worked hard for a year to be told that I would be fantastic for that institution,” Wright said. “This is what inspired me to be in this field. There are a lot of students who are overlooked, and I want to be a mentor for them.”
He shares his story with students to let them know that they are not alone with their obstacles. Wright learned to focus on his potential accomplishments, not on the failures of his past. He wants to share this wisdom with other students.
In his spare time, Wright works with a marching band in Mooresville to teach leadership. He also enjoys cheering for the Mountaineers on Saturdays, cooking, traveling and spending time with his dogs, Charley and Cooper.
Freshmen are encouraged to stop by the Office of Student Success in Cottrell Hall to engage with their success coach.
