Between High Point University’s extensive campus expansion, the completion of BB&T Point Baseball Stadium home of the High Point Rockers, and the opening of multiple storefronts, the city of High Point
is experiencing growth this year. One of the city’s newest shops is making this year exceptionally sweeter.
Eager to be a part of the developing community, Janee and Robert Jarrell opened Scoop Zone, an ice cream
store on 144 North Main Street in downtown
High Point. The shop currently offers twelve different flavors of ice cream with an assortment of toppings and drizzles, cookies, cotton candy, popcorn, popsicles and snow cones.
“Our Cold Fusion Pops are popular because they are made locally, they’re 60 calories, and they’re gluten-free and vegan,” Janee said. “People come in to buy three or four at a time to take them home and freeze them.”
When asked how often ice cream flavors are switched out, Janee said, “We try to have at least one new flavor each month. We actually have three new flavors this month: banana pudding, lemon and blue monster, which is like a combination of cookies and cream and cookie dough.”
There are other popular menu options such as ice cream sundaes with brownies or cookies, ice cream cookie
sandwiches, and rocket balls, which Janee described as “cotton candy wrapped around a serving of one topping ice cream.”
Scoop Zone’s upcoming promotion will be for rocket balls, and the shop suggests keeping a lookout for it on Groupon. Since February of this year, Scoop Zone has been featured in High Point Enterprise and two local magazines, expanded their menu, and participated in community events. Janee enjoyed Scoop Zone’s most recent participation in a Where’s Waldo activity hosted by High Point’s Sunrise Books to celebrate Where’s Waldo’s 30th anniversary and to promote literacy and local shopping.
“Kids received a passport to try to find [Waldo] at 25 locations in High Point for different prizes and drawings,” she said. A couple of months ago, Scoop Zone invested in a mobile trailer, which they now use for churches, birthday parties and other community or fundraising events. On Sept. 20, Scoop Zone will be hosting a free outdoor movie night at the YWCA of High Point, equipped with their trailer full of ice cream, snow cones, and popcorn, as well as a 15-foot inflatable screen and a professional sound system.
“Any of the [HPU] students are free to come and join us, or even set up a table,” Janee encouraged.
Regarding Scoop Zone’s involvement with High Point University, Janee said, “We do see some HPU students often, but it’s hard to tell unless they are wearing HPU gear. We definitely want to connect with the school systems. We are not part of the Passport program yet, but we offer a 10% discount for students with their HPU IDs.”
Scoop Zone is considering partnering with High Point University for events and sports related or holiday opportunities. They already discussed being featured in booklets when the Nido and Mariana Qubein Arena, Conference Center and Hotel opens. Scoop Zone is also open to catering and fundraising opportunities for student organizations on campus with the aid of their mobile trailer and outdoor movie capabilities.
For Janee, the most rewarding part of Scoop Zone is “seeing people happy, the kids’ smiles and knowing we played a part in someone having a good day.”
While the shop continues to grow and gain loving support, owners Janee and Robert Jarrell expressed they are open to ideas for more involvement in the community. Anyone interested in connecting with Scoop Zone can follow them on Facebook, Instagram (@scoopzone) and Twitter (@scoop_zone) for shop updates, hours, events, new monthly flavors, promotions and fun.
