For the second time in program history, High Point University’s women’s lacrosse team clinched the regular season conference title and will be the No. 1 seed for the Big South Tournament. The Panthers defeated Campbell, 17-10 on April 19 at Vert Stadium.
With this win, they improve to 12-3 on the season and 6-0 in Big South play. This victory also extended HPU’s school-record streak to 12 and is the second-longest active win streak in the nation.
Campbell scored the first two goals of the game, but High Point claimed the next seven. The Camels then scored four in a row to cut the HPU lead to 7-6, but the Panthers came back with a 7-1 run to win the game.
Leading the Panthers, senior Samantha Brown scored seven points on five goals and two assists. That brings her up to a total of 44 goals this season, putting her in fourth for most tally in school history. Junior Erica Perrotta followed close behind with three goals and three assists, while junior Brooke Stevens tallied a hat trick.
High Point had a record-breaking 46 shots while Campbell only shot 18. The Panthers also led in draw controls, 16-12, and ground balls, 23-17.
“We are always happy to get a home win, and being that it was the game that determined the No. 1 seed for the conference tournament, we are very excited that we will be hosting that tournament,” said HPU Head Coach Lyndsey Boswell. “It was also really good to see the leadership from two of our seniors tonight. I thought Cristina Del Sesto came up huge for us at different times and Sam Brown led the way on attack. I’m just excited for our seniors this week.”
Del Sesto picked up four draw controls and was a dominating force on the field, while sophomore Emory Gaeng picked up a team-high five ground balls.
