Philanthropy is an important aspect of joining a sorority. On High Point University’s campus, each sorority has a different cause they support. October is Breast Cancer Awareness month, which is Zeta Tau Alpha’s philanthropy. Additionally, October is Domestic Violence Awareness month, which is Alpha Chi Omega’s philanthropy. Breast Cancer Awareness is represented by pink, while Domestic Violence Awareness is represented by purple. Both sororities have events planned throughout October for these causes.

Zeta Tau Alpha started October off with a bang. On Oct. 1 they held a Pink Out at the men’s soccer game. On Oct. 2 they hosted a Pink Pancakes event with the brothers of Beta Theta Pi in Greek Village. On Oct. 3 they hosted a Pink Out Work Out in the Cottrell amphitheater, taught by one of their sisters. On Oct. 4 the sorority hosted a give back night at Chipotle.

The sorority is asking students to wear pink on Oct. 5 as part of their campus-wide Pink Out. New this year is a bowling night which will be held on Oct. 6 at the High Point Bowling Center from 10 p.m. to 1 a.m.

The main event takes place on Oct. 10. It is called Seeds for Hope and it is a time to remember those who have fought breast cancer. The ceremony will be held at 6 p.m. in Hayworth Amphitheater.

The sisters of Alpha Chi Omega have planned many events to promote Domestic Violence Awareness. On Oct. 4 they hosted a showing of “The Hunting Ground,” a movie that uncovers the rape culture on college campuses. Oct. 5 is a give back night at Freddy’s, where the proceeds go towards the Carpenter House, a local domestic violence shelter that the chapter supports.

Oct. 6 is the These Hands Don’t Hurt event in the Wanek Center from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. A the event, any student can take a pledge to not hurt others through violent actions. Oct. 7 is Pizza Pie with Alpha Chi, a pizza selling event held from 10 p.m. to 2 a.m. in Greek Village.

The Lyre Games will be on Oct. 8 from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. The event is held with teams of five, competing in different obstacles and games. The top two teams will go head-to-head in the “Strut your Stuff” event, an event where participants wear red high heels and complete obstacles. The winner of those games wins the entire Lyre Games.

In addition to these events, the sorority is having a feminine hygiene drive for the Carpenter House, where they are collecting items such as shampoo and conditioner throughout the entire month of October. They are also collecting candy and Halloween-type toys for the children staying in the Carpenter House.

Throughout October, the sisters of Zeta Tau Alpha ask that you Think Pink and the sisters of Alpha Chi Omega ask that you Think Purple.
