It may be easy to access movies nowadays with media streaming sites like Netflix, Amazon Prime, or Hulu, but sometimes these sites don’t exactly have the movies you’re dying to watch. HPU has another solution – the first floor of Smith Library. In fact, there are many amazing movies on this floor that often go unrecognized.
“Life is Beautiful” is a film directed by Roberto Benigni released in 1997. The heartbreaking and beautiful story about a father and son being held in a concentration camp during World War II is a can’t miss if you’re looking for an unexpected emotional journey. The story takes a different approach to the topic. Rather than treating the subject matter seriously, it’s a comedy. Although “Life is Beautiful” received many awards, had a cult following and is generally considered a “fan favorite,” the movie also received a lot of criticism for its approach to World War II.
“Mr. Smith Goes To Washington” is a 1939 film directed by Frank Capra. A political comedy about the revelation of a corrupt government, the movie depicts a man, Mr. Smith, becoming a senator and trying to change policies despite being unqualified and inexperienced. The film was initially controversial when released due to the corrupt reality of the government shown in the film; however, the film is now considered an all-time classic.
“Sleepless In Seattle” is a 1993 film directed by Nora Ephron and is considered one of the most classic romantic comedies ever. The storyline tells a bittersweet tale with minimal conflict making it perfect for those seeking an upbeat movie. The story follows Sam Baldwin, portrayed by Tom Hanks, and his quest to find an anonymous woman who writes him a love letter. The anonymous woman ends up being Annie Reed, who is portrayed by Meg Ryan.
“When Harry Met Sally” is a 1989 film directed by Rob Reiner. Also one of the most classic romantic comedies ever created, the film follows a heated debate that takes place between two college graduates driving from New York City to Chicago, and their ensuing relationship. However, unlike “Sleepless in Seattle,” this film questions the ideal relationship between men and women, and the possibility of a purely physical relationship. This film generates conversation while delivering entertainment. Starring Meg Ryan and Billy Crystal, “When Harry Met Sally” is a must-see for anybody who enjoys romantic comedies.
