International Student Profile: Oscar Zeyen

Most freshmen don’t imagine spending their first year of college in a whole new country. Oscar Zeyen from Belgium decided to spend the next four years of his life far away from his hometown to challenge himself and learn about a new culture.
This adjustment has not been a difficult one so far, but Zeyen does say he misses the food back home.
“I specifically miss the french fries, waffles and pretzels,” Zeyen said. “I always ask my mom to send me more chocolate.”
He is not a stranger to the states, however, and came to the U.S. every summer to visit his grandparents in Connecticut, which made the transition a little easier for him.
“I first found out about HPU through my mother,” Zeyen said. “She found out by the rankings of schools in the south.”
He visited many other schools along the southern coast, but when he first visited HPU last summer he instantly felt at home.
“The first thing I noticed was how amazing this campus is,” Zeyen said. “I would live here for the rest of my life.”
Zeyen is studying political science and enjoys all of his classes so far, noting that he is constantly studying to get the most out of his classes.
“I really enjoy president Qubein’s class and I’m sad it’s over,” Zeyen said. “His class was very interesting.”
Another one of his favorite classes is Contemporary Issues in Politics.
“The accessibility to everything is amazing at this school, Zeyen said. “I enjoy that a lot.”
Zeyen is involved in a many clubs at HPU including International Students Club. Zeyen also mentioned loving HPU because it is small enough that he doesn’t get lost.
“I’m definitely here to stay,” Zeyen said. “One hundred percent.”.
