Interested in broadcasting? Join HPU’s ‘HPU Vision’
By Ally Ortolani// Organization’s Editor
HPU Vision is a National Broadcasting Society and Broadcast Education Association under one roof. Students that are involved can claim membership of both organizations on their resumes. Students in the communications field are encouraged to join High Point University Vision to gain hands-on experience in the studio, as well as other broadcasting and narrative techniques.
One of HPU Vision’s facets includes facilitating a weekly news broadcast every Tuesday at 6:30 p.m. in the Nido Qubein School of Communication, streamed live on Youtube and Facebook. The broadcast is completely run by students.
“Participating in the HPU News allows me to practice valuable hands-on skills I can use post-college. Practicing these media-related skills also puts me at an advantage when entering the workforce, ” said Lleyton Seymour, a current sophomore and electronic media major at HPU. Seymour additionally added, “I have been able to work with other students in a real newsroom setting. It’s both beneficial and helpful to interact with students with similar majors and interests.”
Members of the organization can learn and explore the different roles in producing a news broadcast, including being behind the camera, in the control room and in front of the camera. Students can gain valuable knowledge on how each role fits together. For more information on the weekly broadcast, be sure to contact Livy Beaner at lbeaner@highpoint.edu.
HPU Vision additionally aids in the production of several narrative productions throughout the school year. Narrative productions include, but are not limited to, short films, scripted television, and documentaries. Members of the organizations are given access to equipment one would typically not have access to through the Nido R. Qubein School of Communication Equipment Room.
As members of HPU Vision, members of the organization are equally encouraged to come up and execute ideas as a club, as well as recruit club members to participate in his or her narrative projects. Students interested in production should contact co-directors of narrative projects Kamil Abdul-Qahar at kabdulqa@highpoint.edu or Henry Coyle at jcoyle@higihpoint.edu.
HPU Vision includes a weekly entertainment show that is separate from the weekly HPU News broadcast. HPU senior Mitch Rissmiller runs a show called “Point Blank.” This particular broadcast will help connect members with other entertainment shows outside of the organization. Students interested in the entertainment realm of news can contact Mitch Rissmiller at mrissmil@highpoint.edu.
Executive Council leadership opportunities are available upon interest. Except for the positions of secretary and treasurer, every position on the Executive Council is filled by a current senior. However, available positions include President, Vice President, Student Government Association (SGA) Representative and Director of Grads. Elections will be held later this semester.
Currently, HPU Vision collectively meets weekly on Wednesdays from 5-6 p.m. at the Nido R. Qubein School of Communications in room 379.
