Students experience the healing powers of ‘Sick Tea’
By Katherine Grady
Students at High Point University are raving about Starbuck’s sick tea. Rumor has it, the tea has magical powers to cure those who suffer from the common cold. Haven’t heard of sick tea? Maybe you know it as the “Cold Buster” or, “the medicine ball.” But the real question is if the magic drink lives up to its name. Molly Fitzgerald, HPU student, speaks from experience. “I tried the sick tea for the first time when I had a cold and it was amazing. My throat didn’t hurt and my sinuses were clear for at least an hour after drinking it! I would highly recommend.”
Slane Starbucks worker, Elizabeth reveals some background on the creation of sick tea.“Camille Baldwin is a barista from High Point, North Carolina worked at Starbucks here at HPU for ten years. Her creation of the sick tea started four years ago when she started noticing how many students were coming to her asking if she had any drinks that could cure their cold.” Elizabeth continues,“ Cam was my Boss for two and a half years. We trained together in 2012. I just saw her on campus today!”
Ella Lloyd, HPU freshman, raves “I love sick tea because the fruity tea makes the steamed apple juice taste even better and it always makes my throat feel better when I’m sick. It is like an all natural cure to the common cold!”
The secret to the tea is the honey. By adding honey, it works to soothe the throat. Adding a tea bag gives the tea it’s sweet, fruity taste. Students have an option of passion tea, peach tea, youthberry tea, or customer’s choice! More special ingredients are steamed apple juice or steamed lemonade for a tart taste.
“When I order the sick tea, I choose to have passion tea with no honey. I like the flavor of passion tea the best and it felt the best on my throat.”- Jamie West
I talked to two more students, who have experienced the magical healing powers of the sick tea. “It makes you feel better. It actually works,” says Megan Kinney, HPU freshman.
Ever since Camille’s creation, it has been popular on this campus! Even though she left High Point University last year, the legend of the Sick Tea and its’ powers continues to live on.
