Organization spotlight: National Broadcasting Society

The National Broadcasting Society is a national electronic media association. Students studying communications, more specifically electronic media and sports communication, can join this organization to work on improving their skills outside of the classroom. This organization gives students more hands on opportunities to learn about the field they are hoping to enter after college.

High Point’s chapter creates news shows including weather, sports, local and national news segments. They also create narrative short films for students more interested in creative aspects. Each semester, NBS holds a 48 Hour Film Festival where students can compete to create short films with certain requirements within 48 hours.

One of the biggest things that NBS has done is send students to the organization’s national convention. Last year, a group of students had the opportunity to travel to the convention in Los Angeles where they met industry professionals and created a video while they visited there. Currently, there is a group of students who are in New York City to attend this year’s convention from March 22 through March 26.

“As a communication major, it is essential to learn from industry professionals outside of the classroom, and this conference is giving us the opportunity to learn and engage with professionals in all aspects of the media industry,” said HPU freshman Kacey Ruben.

Joe Michaels, HPU professor and former director of the Today Show, took the students to NBC for a tour while they were in NYC on this trip.

“Getting to see behind the scenes at NBC was an amazing part of our trip because not only were we hearing lectures by professionals, but we were able to see the professionals hard at work,” said HPU freshman Niki Maragos.

This year is the 75th annual convention, but also marks the last convention that NBS will host because of financial issues within the organization.

“I am sad that I will not get to experience the convention again after this year, but I am thankful that I got the opportunity to go as a freshman to the final convention,” said HPU freshman Kitt Curtis.
