Greek philanthropy weeks and updates

Sigma Sigma Sigma sorority held their philanthropy week Nov. 6 through Nov. 11. The sorority’s philanthropy is March of Dimes. They kicked the week off with one of their bigger events, Sigma in Color. The event was a color run around campus where sisters threw paint on the runners. On Nov. 8 they held a sugar cookie decorating fundraiser with the brothers of Beta Theta Pi and the sisters of Zeta Phi Beta. On Nov. 9, they held a Mile of Dimes event where they placed dimes around the David Hayworth Park amphitheater. One mile is equivalent to over $9000 in dimes. So, one mile is equivalent to helping 500,000 babies born prematurely in this past year alone. The sorority’s goal was to raise $9000 within the philanthropy week between all of their fundraisers and also through an online campaign. They also had a Barberitos give back night where all of the proceeds went to the Sigma Sigma Sigma Foundation and also the March of Dimes Foundation. On Nov. 11 they held an event where people could write cards to children who are staying at the UNC Childrens Hospital.
The sisters of Kappa Delta held their Philanthropy week Nov. 7 through Nov. 12. On Nov. 7 at 5 p.m., they had the “Kappa Dog” Kissing Booth, where they sold hot chocolate and donuts and had rescue puppies to play with. All of the donations went to save the animals from kill shelters. On Nov. 10 the sisters met in front of Greek Circle and took photos with light blue pinwheels to promote the prevention of child abuse. The light blue pinwheel is the national symbol for preventing child abuse. On Nov. 11 they hosted KD’s Top Dog Hot Dog Eating Contest. While it was a competition, they also sold hot dogs to bystanders to raise money for child abuse prevention efforts. Their biggest event of the week, Kickin’ It with KD, was on Nov. 12. This year they transitioned from a kickball tournament to a bubble soccer tournament with a cook out.
The Panhellenic Council hosted a Barberito’s give back night on Nov. 10. All of the proceeds went towards the Circle of Sisterhood. On the same night, Alpha Kappa Psi, the professional business fraternity, hosted a give back night at Chipotle.
