A smile spreads across your face as you smell the all too familiar aroma of curly fries and burgers at the Point Sports Grill. As you go to order you think back on all the hard work you put in all summer to maintain that ‘summer bod.’ High Point University students have put in countless hours in the gym this summer, trying a variety of different exercises and eating habits. How will they maintain that?

Sophomore Remi Rhol stresses the importance of balancing nutrition and exercise. “My big thing that I live by no matter what season is eating clean,” Rhol said. “I feel so much more energized, healthy, and clean this way. The ration is truly 80 percent what you eat and 20 percent exercising.”

On campus Rhol finds a variety of ways to stay healthy on and off the meal plan. She believes that HPU does a good job of providing healthy options for its students, but they just need to know where to find it.

“I’ll go shopping once a week to get fresh fruits and veggies, but I eat a lot of the Great Day Bakery, Farmer’s Market, and Café at school,” Rhol said. “There are always smarter options wherever I go. I’m not going to say no to a burger or some french fries every once in awhile, but everything in moderation.”

Rhol laughs saying that she is known in her family as a ‘gym rat,’ making sure to go to the gym almost every day. She stresses that going everyday does not have to be a full body workout every time. It is best to focus on a couple areas a day to maintain variety.

Senior Kyla Molina maintains variety in her workout schedule, not by workout, but by music. She spent most of her summer doing soul cycling which is a variation of indoor cycling that mixes song themes and core workouts.

“It’s like dancing on a bike. You ride to the rhythm of the beat,” Molina said. “You do push ups, obliques and tap-backs on the bike.”

Molina took several classes over the summer and on vacation and would create her own class listening to her own music.

“When I’m not at home and I’m at school, I grab my headphones and do my own soul cycle for 45 minutes,” Molina said. “With spinning at school I’m able to bring a little bit of soul with me. It’s my happy place.”

Senior Amanda Rossi found her happy place this summer with a traveling high school performance group called The RockNRoll chorus. Rossi instructed the students on workouts, stretching, balance and lectures.

“This group was kind of like Pitch Perfect,” Rossi said. “I would give them lectures all about nutrition, fitness and how your diet should change based on the amount of activity you have in one day. The classes were scattered throughout their two-week boot camp and then my class material and workouts were used through July and August when they were on tour.”

Rossi explained that the most important tip about staying fit is to find something you love and stick to it. She said it can be pretty easy to stay healthy on the meal plan, just know when to switch out a bun for a whole grain wrap, or when to choose a healthy side over curly fries.
