1) In any emergency situation, students are highly encouraged to call security at 336-841-9111. “Any incident that potentially places one’s health or safety in jeopardy would be considered and emergency,” Jeff Karpovich, director of HPU security and transportation, said. “We welcome all calls but without question they should call to report a crime, in progress or occurred, a suspicious person or package, or whenever they feel uncomfortable and would prefer an escort.” In fact, in these types of situations, security can typically reach students more quickly than the police could.

2) For non-emergencies, students should call 336-841-9112. HPU security offers a variety of services to ensure the safety of everyone on campus. “We provide escorts, vehicle assists, door unlocks, exigent medical transports, medical assists. Most anything of reason to support or comfort our students,” Karpovich said.

3) HPU’s campus is staffed with on-duty Campus Security Officers 24 hours per day. In addition, the security team is assisted by off-duty members of the High Point Police Department at night. This ensures that no matter what issue or concern a student may have, someone is available to help at all times.

4) HPU uses the smartphone app, LiveSafe, to further ensure the protection of everyone on campus. This app can be used to send anonymous information to the HPU security team and also offers a live map of campus shuttle times, counseling services and an emergency response guide to help students prepare for potential emergencies.

5) HPU security is always evolving and improving and as a result has made many changes since last year. These improvements include LiveSafe enhancements, a new visitor management system and an upgraded card access system. Many improvements have also been made to the campus itself including stove fire suppression in the village, the town homes and the university houses. New fire alarm systems in Norcross and Roberts Hall have been added in addition to doors that are lockable from the inside in all classrooms.
