Lorenzo Cugini is one of the most prolific three point shooters in college basketball.
The senior forward has been knocking down big shots from three point range early and often for High Point University’s promising team this season.
Cugini has continued to improve across the board throughout his time playing for HPU.
The Ohio native played his high school ball for St. Vincent-St. Mary high school in Akron. He helped lead the team to state championships in 2009 and 2011.
Cugini has shown growth in nearly every statistical category since his freshman year. These improvements include field goal percentage, free throw percentage, points per game, and three point percentage.
His proficiency this season has earned him a spot an exclusive group known as the 50-40-90 club. This term is used for players who shoot at least 50 percent from the field, 40 percent from three point range, and 90 percent from the free throw line. Players that are able to accomplish this are highly regarded in basketball circles. It is considered the pinnacle of offensive efficiency.
Cugini is currently shooting 51.2 percent from the field, 54.7 percent from three point range, and 91.3 percent from the free throw line.
This impressive three point shooting has earned him a spot as the fourth best three point shooter in the country. He is the only non guard player in college basketball that cracks the top 10 on the list.
Alongside seasoned veterans and a host of new faces, Cugini will look to continue to stretch the floor and to assert the dominance that HPU hoops has showcased over the past few seasons.
The team is first in the conference and looks to capture their fourth consecutive Big South Conference regular season championship this year. With the emergence of Cugini’s shooting prowess and contributions of stars like John Brown and Adam Weary, the team looks like it’ll be a major threat to break into the NCAA tournament this year.
