Ducks Unlimed club aims to conserve wetlands
By Maddie Travell // Organizations Editor
Ducks Unlimited is the ultimate guide and source of information about all things relating to waterfowl and hunting.
The club’s mission is to preserve and take part in conservation efforts in the wetlands for current and future habitation of waterfowl. The founders of this organization were avid hunters but also wanted to incorporate a way to nurture the growth of the waterfowl so future generations could enjoy the game as well.
The organization is prevalent and covers most geographic areas. There are many different levels of membership that are established throughout the nation, there are High School, Community, and University Chapters.
“The university chapter on High Point University’s campus was charted at the end of 2014 in the spring,” said Stephen Pollock, Junior, “our chapter has grown since to about 30 members.”
Even though the organization is new, there has been an impressive show of interest. Stephen Pollock is a founding father and the treasurer of the organization. He has seen the chapter grow from the very early stages of brining the orgaanization to campus to seeing the student body participate and support the club.
“Our biggest challenge is making Ducks Unlimited a known chapter around campus,” Katherine Johnson, senior, said. “Many of the students who join or are interested in becoming involved already have previous knowledge of the organization from a local chapter.”
In the upcoming semester the chapter is planning to hold a banquet as a fundraiser for the organization. Couples tickets will be for sale and it will be complete with a silent auction including popular brands such as YETI Coolers and Southern Tide. The banquet will be open for students and community members to attend.
A project the chapter is currently organizing this semester is creating wood duck boxes. These are boxes where birds can roost and lay their eggs to facilitate the growth in certain areas. They are planning to work with local business to help construct the boxes.
