LiveSafe mobile app brings new dimension to campus security

The High Point University Preparedness and Safety Team has partnered with an app called LiveSafe to create a safer environment for students on campus. The app, which launched at the beginning of the 2014-2015 academic year, allows students to report tips, call for emergencies, find the safest routes home and more.

“LiveSafe does not replace any other reporting tools the department has, but is intended to complement the other methods,” said Gus Porter, Emergency Preparedness and Safety Coordinator.

There are numerous features within the app. Students are able to report tips for non-emergencies such as accidents, disturbances, drugs and alcohol, theft, vandalism, etc. Reports can include audio, photos, or videos, giving security and/or the police a better understanding of the situation before they even arrive. Tips can be sent anonymously as well.

“When a report is submitted, a sonar ping alerts dispatchers of the new message. Dispatchers are able to text the user for additional information, and can view the general location if the user’s GPS feature is enabled on the phone,” Porter said.

This will allow police, fire departments, EMS and campus security to dispatch if necessary.

“A survivor of the Virginia Tech massacre was integral in the development of LiveSafe,” Porter said. “An emergency can happen at any time. Providing quick notification to authorities and including as much detailed information as possible makes a major impact in the response. The user can text dispatch to provide information and dispatch can share any updates through the text feature.”

In additional emergency situations, the app gives you direct access to 911 and HPU security. With one click, you can call 911, security, or message HPU security.

“Chief Karpovich was a major proponent for this type of tool and was the driving force for its implementation,” said Porter. “We want students to be comfortable reporting any concern to security.”

A main feature within the app is called SafeWalk which allows you and your friends to look out for each other by sharing your location with them as you walk, allowing them to track your location. It gives you access to a map, showing you blue light tower locations, safety places, building lists, etc. and allows you to directly contact the police if necessary.

Students are also able to access emergency preparedness plans through the app. Users can now quickly access information about how to prepare, plan and respond to various emergencies on campus. However, the SafeWalk feature is not exclusive to HPU’s campus. The feature expands to allow you to use it on vacations, at home, or anywhere else you choose.

“High Point University is serious about the safety and security of its campus and we know that students cannot receive an extraordinary education in an unsafe environment,” said Porter.

This application is a great option to keep students connected with security and safety during their time on campus. LiveSafe is free for download in the App Store and is available now.
